How do I Learn About my Bankruptcy Options?

What is the starting point for anyone thinking about filing for bankruptcy? Before gathering all the bills, pay stubs, receipts or any of the other paperwork you will actually need, your first step ought to be directed towards educating yourself about the bankruptcy process.

  1. How can I benefit from a Chapter 7 bankruptcy?
  2. How can I benefit from a Chapter 13 bill consolidation bankruptcy?
  3. Are there non-bankruptcy alternatives out there that would serve my needs better than bankruptcy?

You can and should do your own research on the Internet to familiarize yourself with the terms and concepts. The Clerk of Court for the Northern District of Georgia includes a bankruptcy basics section on its website – you can visit that here. Ginsberg Law publishes a comprehensive bankruptcy law site here: https://www.atlanta-bankruptcy-attorney.com.

While the Internet is a great source of information about bankruptcy, be aware of two limitations:

  • while 80% of bankruptcy law is federal, about 20% depends on where you file. So even the greatest bankruptcy law site published by a California or New York lawyer may not be fully applicable to an Atlanta area resident
  • not everything you read on the Internet is accurate or updated

Once you have a general idea about how bankruptcy works, it will be time to call or email a bankruptcy lawyer for advice specific to your situation. At Ginsberg Law, we make this process simple and as painless as possible. Instead of asking you to fill out a 30 page questionnaire along with pay stubs, budgets, bills and other documents, we use a simple 2 page questionnaire that you can complete in 5 minutes.

While we will need all the detailed information later if we decide to proceed, the 2 page form will give us enough information to have an intelligent conversation with you. Our attorneys (Jonathan Ginsberg and Susan Blum) have over 35 years’ combined experience representing bankruptcy clients in the Atlanta area. We have pretty much seen every type of debt situation imaginable so there is a good chance that whatever issues you are facing, we have seen and solved before.

You’ll discover that the bankruptcy law contains a few basic rules and lots and lots of exceptions. There are no “one size fits all” solutions. Once we (as your lawyer) understand what you are trying to accomplish with your bankruptcy, we can guide you in the right direction. And, the only way we can determine how bankruptcy will work for you is by spending time with you one on one.

If you’re ready to get started, click here to download our 2 page questionnaire. Fill it out, then fax or email to us. Rest assured that everything you discuss with us is confidential and you are not obligated to us in any way until we both agree to formalize a representation. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
