If you believe that you are disabled, you must apply for Social Security disability benefits. Applying is easy and there is no charge. My experience has been that the on-line application process works well and can speed up the process. Social Security has gone to a paperless system and if you apply online, your file will be paperless (electronic) from the start.
The link to apply online is here: ssa.gov/applyfordisability.
If you are not comfortable with computers, you can still apply by phone – 1-800-772-1213. Be prepared to navigate through a voice mail tree before you get to a live person. You can also file your application in person at your local Social Security office. This can make sense if you are a younger claimant with a visible impairment because the intake clerks will generally write down observations about your appearance.
Here is a short video I recorded where you can learn more about starting your Social Security disability claim. If you have any questions about the process, please call me at 770-393-4985. Either Mya (my paralegal) or I would be happy to walk you through the process.
